"There's a spirituality in my art that the viewer must interpret for himself. Frequently I paint women whose faces are turned upwards, toward the sky. Many times their eyes are closed, as if in peaceful contemplation. I want my paintings to express a depth of serenity that comes only with inner peace."![]() These originals were created with oil pastels on a special bark paper (unless otherwise noted). Oil pastels are shaped like traditional pastels, but look and act like oil paints. They are less fragile than traditional pastels, and can be built up into a thick application (impasto) on the canvas or paper. Oil pastels are also cleaner than soft pastels, resist crumbling, and do not pose the health risk of breathing dust. The bark paper from the Otomi Indian tribe in Central Mexico.
