"My interest in the Daylight," Phillips explains,"was sparked when my parents took me down to the Sepulveda Boulevard crossing in Los Angeles to watch the Daylight roar by, arriving from San Francisco. It was a magnificent sight, with a full head of steam up and the late afternoon sun glinting off its sparkling surface." The Southern Pacific's GS-4 4-8-4, number 4449, is the only Daylight type locomotive still operating. It was restored in 1976 and used to pull the Bicentennial Freedom Train. In 1984 it was repainted in the familiar Southern Pacific color scheme--orange, red, black, white, and silver--which is how Phillips best remembers it. We also do beautiful custom framing.
